School teacher suspended after racist remarks

A teacher at Fred Norman High School in Gauteng recently came under fire after he was caught on camera making racist remarks. The altercation prompted Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, to visit the school and condemn the behavior of the educator.
Fred Norman High School, located in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, has caught the attention of the Gauteng Minister of Education (MEC), Panyaza Lesufi, over a racist altercation between one of the school’s teachers and the grandparent of one of the students.

In a video circulating on social media, a black educator can be heard hurling racist remarks at a Colored grandparent.

The teacher recorded herself arguing with a grandparent who came to the school to ask why her granddaughter had not been able to attend the teacher’s class for the past two weeks.

The heated argument took place in the classroom in front of several students who were seen standing on desks with a front row seat to the argument.

In the video, the teacher can be heard saying, “I don’t like colorful colors” and also calling the grandparents “garbage”, which has now sparked outrage and intervention from the community and Lesufi.

A group gathered in front of the school gate demanding the immediate dismissal of the teacher.

“Fortunately this time she was caught on camera boldly insulting our community. We are not racist but we demand a public apology from her and her expulsion from this school,” Ennerdale resident John Delange said.

The outraged group used Lesufi’s visit as an opportunity to raise other issues facing the school, including bullying and substance abuse among transport drivers and students.

In addition to these complaints, the group also claimed that this was not the first time that this particular educator had been racist. The teacher, along with several of her colleagues, allegedly told children from the community on the outside that they “don’t like coloreds.”

Lesufi told the group that racism will not be tolerated and has therefore temporarily suspended the educator while further investigations are currently underway.

“I am hurt by the teacher’s statements. Such behavior is unacceptable. No one must defend such behaviour,” Lesufi told the group. “The teacher was suspended as a precaution. The department has prioritized this matter and we will resolve it quickly.”
